There is no history of any struggle taken up by the DMK getting defeated. The DMK cadre by taking up hunger strike in order to redeem the rights of fishermen of Tamil Nadu have made the entire India turn to them. Yes… as pointed out by Chief Minister Kalaignar at the DMK High level action committee on July 17, the time has come for us to take up the issue to field. There is a saying in villages. After biting the lamb and cow human beings are bitten. The activities of Lankan army continue only like that. There is only one difference. They are not biting lamb and cow; they are biting human beings continuously.
No other movement had so far organized powerful struggles like the DMK condemning Sri Lankan government which refuses the rights of Tamil people living in Sri Lanka and carrying out cruel attacks on them. Accepting the call of Kalaignar, within 12 hours, lakhs of people gathered in Chennai and took out a rally to Raj Bhavan. Only the DMK has such a history. By organizing agitations for the welfare of Lankan Tamils thousands of DMK cadre went to jails. On behalf of the Youth wing, hunger strike was organised for Lankan Tamils. Than all these, stressing the rights of Lankan Tamils, Thalaivar Kalaignar and our General Secretary Prof. K.Anbazhagan sacrificed their membership of State Assembly, history has not forgotten this supreme sacrifice. The government led by Kalaignar has adopted a unanimous resolution in the Assembly calling upon the Government of India to take efforts for the welfare of Lankan Tamils. But the atrocities and excesses of the Lankan government keep continuing.
Besides the attacks on Tamils living there, attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen going to the seas has become regular feature. Accusing them of fishing beyond maritime boundary and that they trespassed into Katchatheevu area the Lankan navy is firing or Tamil Nadu fishermen and killing them. Tamil Nadu fishermen being arrested and taken to Lanka and subjected to cruelties and torture and they being released by the efforts taken by Kalaignar government also continued. If a permanent solution has to be found for this issue our rights in Katchatheevu should be established. And the DMK has undertaken peaceful struggle for this cause. Guns are pointed out at Tamil Nadu fishermen who go for fishing in the sea. This state of affairs continue for the past 25 years.
A petition was presented to the Vice Consul of Lanka in Chennai on behalf of the DMK Youth wing and demanding stopping of attacks on Tamils, there is no use. Hence the DMK has entered the field losing out patience. This is the most ripe opportunity to redeem the rights of Tamils. This is the time when the conference of SAARC countries is being held in Sri Lanka and Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is also participating in it. The DMK in its high level action committee stated that efforts should be made for establishing in this conference our rights in Katchatheevu, redeem the rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen and find out ways for the Lankan Tamils to live peacefully. A resolution to this effect was also adopted.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Kalaignar has asked the support of entire Tamil society for the effort taken by the DMK to redeem out rights and to protect the welfare of our fishermen. DMK cadre and Youth wing cadre all should coordinate, mobilize Tamil society and enter the field to redeem our rights.

I was extremely glad to understand through the internet the extent of affection you have for me, one among you, even while I was abroad. Your affinity for the DMK gives me more encouragement and impetus than the greetings you have conveyed to me out of affection. Our dear leader Kalaignar is protecting unextinguished the torch of the DMK, that Anna lit from the nationalist of flame called Periyar. Your views registered through internet doubly confirm that our party, which is on the verge of reaching 60th year of existence, will remain as a mighty movement in the next generation also. Besides the younger generation of Tamil Nadu, many young Tamilians living in other states of India and various parts of the world have expressed their interest in joining as members of the DMK, and desire to join the Youth Wing and have asked about the possibility to become members through online. The views registered in the site further confirms the big impact the DMK has made on the youth of new generation and that it considers Kalaignar, who functions with youthful spirit even at the age of 85,as the guide.
The membership drive of the DMK is over and now party organizational elections are being conducted. After these elections, the Party General Secretary Perasiriyar will issue the announcement on the enrolment of new members, which will be published in the party organ “Murasoli” and put on the net. Afterwards you can get Membership form from the party headquarters Anna Arivalayam, fill it up and become members. Those who want to join the Youth Wing can get the membership forms from the headquarters of the wing Anbagam, fill it up and become members.
I would like to inform that the Party President and General Secretary will be informed of the keen interest of Tamil youths living in various countries in getting through online, membership form of the Party and Youth Wing and suitable arrangements will be made as per their suggestions.
Arignar Anna said that the need for DMK was essential for another 25 years. But owing to the trials and tribulations that the Party had to face and the resultant despair caused to Tamil Nadu, Kalaignar keeps us reminding that the need for DMK is essential for another half a century. It gives us pride that on realizing this need the younger generation shows interest in dedicating themselves as party cadres. As one among you, always laying stress on the point that there is no greater post than being the DMK cadre, the interest shown by younger generation to take upon the responsibility rejuvenates me. The hope and confidence that the banyan tree of the DMK will stand as umbrella for Tamils and protect them for ever.

It is hard to find in Tamil Nadu as well as in the Indian history, a leader working round the clock for the past 70 years for the well-being and development of their mother tongue – Chief Minister Thiru. M. Karunanidhi is one among the great leaders. Though he has faced lot of personal losses and curses in the war against social evils, he is still working for the upliftment and development of the race at the age of 84.
Like a mother, who acts accordingly for the welfare of the family’s future, Kalaignar is developing schemes for the welfare of Tamil Nadu. The previous government has banned the new appointments thus putting the future of the younger generation in dark. But Kalaignar has removed the ban on new appointments and filled the vacancies in various government offices thereby giving life to the new generation. Various vacancy positions such as doctors, nurses, drivers and conductors in the respective department have been filled for the past 2 years. Examinations are conducted for the village administrator and social welfare officers which provides employment for the younger generation. In day-today situation across the world, private sector’s growth has become indefinite. Hence Kalaignar has paved way for many crores of investments in Information Technology sector from various Multi National Companies so as to provide employment for the educated youths in Tamil Nadu. Since the Information technology sector of Tamil Nadu is the fastest growing industry among other states in India, instead of searching overseas jobs, younger generation can get a job in Tamil Nadu with higher Salaries.
It is not definite that every literate is assured of getting a job. A jobless youngster is an unwanted person in his family and is given a title “Useless Buggar”. If his family itself discourages him then what will the youngster will do? ‘Unemployed youngsters on the roadside and the dangerous thoughts in their mind’- as quoted by Arignar Anna, unemployed literate youngsters will be receiving the financial assistance till they get permanent jobs. Other states are also following the schemes of Kalaignar.
Kalaignar is always been a role model for others. He has started a trust from the money he incurred from shares. Through this trust, he is helping the children, youngsters and old age people for the medical treatment. The number of beneficiaries of the trust who has undergone heart surgeries is increasing year by year. His helping hands have rendered life to many people. Today they are all in good health. Kalaignar is very happy to see the future of Tamil Nadu on the faces of the people who were benefited by the scheme. He is like a father and mother showing way for the Tamilians and everybody feels proud of him.
Kalaignar is the only leader who works not only for the welfare of people of Tamil Nadu but also for the welfare of the Tamilians living worldwide. When people of Tamil Nadu are in difficult situation, Kalaignar feels very bad about it. In Thiruvalluvar district about 250 children has been vaccinated. Among them 4 died. Hearing the news, Chief Minister felt the pain and agony of a mother and immediately announced in the assembly Rs. 3 lakhs as a relief amount to the parents of the children who died. It was not just an announcement. On the same evening, Health Minister, District Collector and other higher officials paid the relief amount personally and consoled the parents of the deceased. Then only Chief Minister felt relieved. Only those who love their mother tongue and his race will know the suffering of a mother. Hence motherly feeling of Kalaignar is natural.
It was 1996 – 2001 ruling period. It was late night when Kalaignar got the news that there is leakage in Poondy reservoir. If the leakage increases then there would be severe water flood in the area. Even though there were a number of Officials, Engineers and Ministers, Kalaignar could have deputed someone to control the leakage. Our Chief Minister is not one of those who would take rest in a cool resort and order someone to take remedial action. Instead, though it was a dark midnight, Kalaignar reached the Poondy reservoir in his car. The Engineers, officials and the Ministers also reached the spot immediately. Even though there was danger of flood in the area, risking his life, Kalaignar personally went to the spot. After supervising the leakage control measures, he returned back home. Can we ever see a leader of this caliber in any other States? If it is a development scheme of Tamil Nadu, without considering his old age and health, he would travel to Madurai and inaugurate the welfare schemes. Next day he returns back to Chennai and inaugurates the Manufacturing facility at Sriperumpadur. The next day as usual he attends the assembly and takes part in the proceedings. He takes part in the party work, press work, literary work and meets the party men and the day goes on without any rest.
It is the duty of every Tamilian to be a supportive force in his long journey to make Tamil Nadu as the top most state in India.

Recent studies have shown that half of the world population had to live in urban areas. Over ages the phenomenon of rural people migrating to urban areas seeking economic development and in expectation of new employment opportunities had been going on. However, in the present times of globalization, multinational corporations and domestic industrial companies are setting up their new units on vast areas adjacent to cities and town, thereby creating new employment opportunities. Hence the process of migration towards urban areas has accelerated.
The capital city of Chennai for years had been attracting rural people. People every day are storming towards Chennai for various reasons like government and private employment opportunities, industrial and commercial development, opportunities in the field of arts, higher education etc., Bearing in mind the resultant population congestion Chief Minister Kalaignar, as much back in 1970s itself, formulated schemes and implemented them to face traffic congestion in Chennai.
The Anna Over bridge on Anna Salai in Chennai bears the best testimony for his efforts. Realizing beforehand the probable traffic congestion in Chennai after 30 years, the Anna Over bridge built by Kalaignar in early 1970s is now having the capacity to face city’s traffic flow. As other roads in Chennai were also developing like Anna Salai, 9 flyovers were constructed during my Mayoralty of Chennai between 1996 and 2001 under DMK rule in the State. Traffic congestion to a great extent has been averted in these areas including Royapuram, Purasawalkam, Egmore, Royapettah and Adyar. Now Chennai Corporation authorities have undertaken flyover construction works in areas like Kodambakkam and Thyagaraya Nagar. Along with these works, when the works on construction of flyovers, undertaken by Nationla Highways authorities of the Central government in which the DMK is a constituent, at Guindy Kathipara junction and Koyambedu are completed, the traffic congestion of the city will be averted totally.
Although the flyovers constructed in the heart of the city and bypass roads laid around the city will reduce the problem to an extent, only the extension of the city will yield total result. Chief Minister Kalaignar has been urging this. It was Kalaignar who began in 1970s itself the process of relieving Chennai from scarcity of space by forming Slum Clearance Board, a pioneer step in the country. Considering the present phase of development, the DMK government has undertaken efforts to set up satellite cities. The scarcity for space in the heart of city will be averted when such satellite cities are formed in suburban areas and important government and private sector offices are shifted there. The DMK government which has undertaken these schemes and procedures, for implementing them, has also formulated relief measures which will ensure people and farmlands in suburban areas remain unaffected. Construction of new flyovers, subways and pedestrian over bridges with escalators within the city, laying bypass roads around the city and setting of satellite cities in suburban areas are the only means to relieve Chennai from traffic congestion. The DMK government is evincing interest and determination in implementing them.
Suggestions in this regard are welcome

“Politics seems to have become a part time business for some who have floated political parties. The people should beware of such politicians, who had emerged overnight and had floated parties with selfish motives. Their aim is to become chief minister without making any sacrifice.”
“Nobody should aspire for any posts or power. It should come to you and you should not go after them. Make sacrifices but do not expect rewards, Everyone should take a vow to work for a casteless society. Caste system has divided the Tamils. A situation should be created to unite all Tamils under one banner.”

“Let the youth dedicate themselves to create an egalitarian society where there is no disparities based on caste, community and economic status. Conscious of the fact that the DMK is the only rampart and bulwark of Tamil Nadu, I will stand with you shoulder to shoulder and come as one among you to work with determination” – M.K.Stalin.
What would you do to create an egalitarian society?
